Catechists help others to grow in their faith to a variety of age groups: Elementary age children, Junior and Senior High School Teens, Young Adults and Adults. The Rec program is sponsored by the Albany Diocese. A group of volunteers present a three day retreat for the inmates at Hale Creek Correctional Facility. These retreats follow a theme-based format and proceed with Bible readings, prepared talks and table discussions and poster drawing. The weekend also includes Reconciliation and a Mass. Usually about 23 volunteers from all around the diocese make up a weekend team.
REC gives interested Catholics an opportunity to serve the men at Hale Creek (a Corporal Work of Mercy) in a structured setting and with the support of the prepared team. Weekly meetings and preparation begin about eight weeks before each scheduled weekend, one in the spring and one in the fall. After the REC weekend, some team members have the opportunity to reconnect with the residents each month for about an hour and a half on a chosen evening.
Also on the Saturday night of each weekend, outsiders (people not on the team) come to a Hootenany...a time of music and socializing with the inmates and a chance to see first hand a little of the REC weekend experience. Some people from our parish have enjoyed coming to several of these "HOOTS". In addition, we distribute letters, prayer cards and written prayers to the inmates during the weekend. If you want to support the REC program but cannot be physically involved, you could write a card or a letter expressing prayers for the success of the weekend.
If you are interested or would like more information about REC, call Ann or John Jones at 725-5989.
